ABSTRACT

The readings of the Brontë juvenilia and The Professor can be seen as ‘discovery’, as an unearthing of buried material, making possible a rereading and a reinterpretation of those writings that have given Charlotte Brontë a position in the annals of English literature. Women-feminists and non-feminists alike-have read and reread Jane Eyre to celebrate it as a text where the female author, the female protagonist and the female reader are joined together in sisterly harmony and recognition.
