ABSTRACT

It has been estimated that there are between 300,000 and 600,000 Native American bodies stored in federal institutions, such as the Smithsonian Institution, public and private universities, and museums and private collections in America, and that at least one-half million bodies are held in collections in foreign countries. Indian tribes and national Indian organizations have organized a national drive to get these human remains back into Indian hands for appropriate disposition. Notwithstanding the claims of scientific and educational interests, on moral, religious and legal grounds these remains belong back in the ground or other suitable final resting place.
