ABSTRACT

Being practical means doing things instead of simply sitting and listening. In science, you learn and remember things better if you have found them out for yourself by observing, experimenting, or making a test. A: Example

In Unit 19 on p. 43, there is a question about clouds, and the kind of weather they bring. You could answer this in several ways:

You could ask somebody the answer.

You could find a book about clouds, and look the answer up.

You could observe clouds for several days and keep records of the weather which follows them.

The most practical way is (3), because you find the answer from your own observations. The next best would be (2), because you also do something to find out. (1) may be the easiest way, but you may soon forget what you have learned. You can see that most of the questions in this book are about finding things out by doing different things.

B: Example

A group of children collected lots of plants to study.
