ABSTRACT

Too often life seems dominated by economics, and it looks as if this book is about how it dominates even the length of life. But more fundamentally it is about the importance of human social needs, and the way health is affected by the growing conflict between economic systems and the fulfilment of our social needs. Its main message is of the primary importance of social relations to us as social beings. At all stages in human societies, whether rich or poor, the quality of social relations has been a prime determinant of human welfare and the quality of life.
