ABSTRACT

Behaviourtherapyisgenerallydefinedasatreatmentcharacterizedbydeliberate attemptstomodifyspecificbehavioursfortherapeuticpurposes.Typicallythe therapistfocusesonbehaviourswhichleadtotheobtainingandadministrationof drugs.Thisisincontrasttonon-directivetherapieswhichdonottargetspecific behaviours,butrathertheyencourageself-expressionandhelpthepatientingeneral tounderstandfeelingsandrelationships.Inpractice,thereisnoneedforasharp separationbetweendirectiveandnon-directivetherapies.Patientsmaybestbe managedbyacombinationapproachinvolvingdifferenttechniquesusedatdifferent timesduringthecourseoftherapy.Inthischapter,althoughwewillfocuson behaviourtherapyperse,inacomplicatedconditionsuchasaddiction,anarrow focusonbehaviourtherapyalonewouldrarelybeindicatedexceptforresearch purposes.
