ABSTRACT

Over the last five years there have been, among others, a number of reports on substance misuse from the Royal Colleges (Royal College of Psychiatrists, 1986, 1987; Royal College of Physicians, 1987; Royal College of General Practitioners, 1986). While it was clear that training for medical personnel should be improved, guidelines for achieving this were not outlined. A mechanism for the setting up and implementation of courses in fields such as nursing, social work and psychology was not clearly addressed until the recent report on training from the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (1990).
