ABSTRACT
The structure and contents of this book are based on my own experience and learning in residential work. In the Preface I have given an account of my introduction to and subsequent career in residential care, and in Chapter 1 I recount five detailed episodes from my own work. These episodes are selected to highlight the widening range of issues and dilemmas on which I concentrate in the ensuing chapters.
