ABSTRACT

One of the most important features of the processes that we have looked at in the previous two chapters is the emergence of new forms of racialised political discourse. These discourses relate both to the general issue of increased political participation by minorities as well as the role of black and ethnic minority politicians. In the following chapters we want to explore the distinct discursive forms emerging within electoral politics in the past decade that deal with these phenomena. These forms of racial discourse are not simple or unitary, reflecting as they do diverse views within both the Labour and Conservative Parties. It is also clear that there are in practice a complex set of political discourses articulated by black and ethnic minority politicians.
