ABSTRACT
In the seventies the number of schools for special education decreased rapidly in Italy, as far as public education was concerned. The majority of students with special needs now attend regular education. There are now only a small number of schools left for physically, sensorily and mentally handicapped pupils. The most important measure that has been taken to make it possible to educate children with special needs in the regular school was the introduction of the so-called support teacher.
