ABSTRACT

In the last ten years much has been done by dedicated feminists to fill this great gap. The first wave of work in this area (1982-5) produced three dictionaries-The Macmillan Dictionary of Women’s Biography (1982), edited by Jennifer Uglow and Frances Hinton; The Europa Biographical Dictionary of British Women (1983), edited by Anne Crawford et al.; and Dictionary of British and American Women Writers (1985), edited by Janet Todd. A second, more recent wave of productivity in the field has brought out the three volumes under review here.
