ABSTRACT

The topic of this paper is the unexpected syllabification behaviour of certain English liquids and nasals, which results in the formation of syllabic consonants that appear to be new to RP. Typical examples include ˈbɪtļi for bitterly, ˈkætļɒg catalogue (for the traditional ˈkætəlɒg) and ˈdetņeɪt detonate (for the traditional ˈdetәneɪt).
