ABSTRACT

O'Connor (1973: 289–90) emphasises the importance of articulatory setting (henceforth AS), i.e. the overall manner in which the speech organs are held and which underlies all articulatory movements superimposed on them. In this paper, we shall discuss how a knowledge of setting can help the Danish learner to acquire convincing American English pronunciation, and compare the pedagogic approach needed with that appropriate for other types of learner. 1
