ABSTRACT

This book has focused on the conduct of field research. In particular, attention has been devoted to discussing the processes and principles of field research together with field methods. In each chapter, examples have been taken from field studies in order to sensitise researchers to the potential problems involved in conducting research and to provide some indication of the ways in which these problems may be handled. For it is essential to be acquainted with what researchers do and how they go about doing it in order to understand the practice of field research. In turn, this not only provides an introduction to field research for those who wish to conduct their own investigations, but also gives social scientists who are the recipients of field studies some indication of the kinds of methodological issues that need to be considered when evaluating a research report.
