ABSTRACT
In Chapter 4 I tried, via a critical discussion of Elias’s work, to elaborate the fundamental distinction between figurational and institutional structures. In this chapter I shall look at recent attempts to revive Parsonian functionalism and evolutionism, and show how certain Marxist conceptual tools can help us establish more adequate linkages between institutional and figurational wholes.
