Introduction

The previous two chapters dealt mainly with social wholes. In Chapter 4, a comparison between Parsons and Elias tried to establish the fundamental distinction between institutional and figurational structures; in Chapter 5, via a Parsons-Marx comparison, I worked out a way of conceptualizing the linkages between these two types of structure.
