ABSTRACT

So there lived this peasant and his woman. And they had this only son. The peasant took and died. And the son remained not yet grown, about fifteen or sixteen years old. So the two of them lived together. And the son had no learning, nothing. But the son had his father's old rifle, a poor one. He would go into the forest and kill some bird, some squeaky thing or a grouse. So he walked around, just living there, but then once he happened on some robbers. These robbers invited him in and gave him ten rubles. He came and told his mother and she was overjoyed that they had given him ten rubles. The next day he got up and once more set off. "I'll go there again," he said to his mother. And so he walked and walked, and the robbers found him and said, "Come with us!" Now he was a young lad, so he went with them. And they asked him, "Who is staying at home?"
