ABSTRACT

The soldier thought to himself, "So I've served twenty-five years for twenty-five kopecks and an empty bag. I suppose I'll have to get home begging in the name of Christ along the road." Then the soldier received his documents, twenty-five kopecks and a really old bag, which was only worth tossing away. Well, it was his reward! He took it, put it on, put a change of underwear in his backpack, and set off on the way. He walked for a day, he walked for a second, and then a third. He had finished it, all his money was spent. Where had the money gone? He'd bought some tobacco, a little soap, and that was all. "What should I do next?" he thought. "It's still a long way home." Before there were no trains, no cars, nothing. So he had to walk on foot and to get there on foot would take a minimum of about six months to his house. The soldier thought and thought. "A living man won't perish. I'll go quietly along." So once he begged for a bite and walked for a week, then he walked a second and then he came to a village and stopped by a hut. And in the hut there were an old man and old woman.
