So the smith swore it, vowed that he would never raise his hammer against the devil, but would always show him the greatest respect. So the worker ran into the smithy and quickly came back with the landlord. "Wait," he shouted to the servants, "don't hang him. Here is your master!" So they immediately untied the ropes and let the smith down from all sides. And since then the smith has ceased spitting at the devil and beating him with his hammer. But the worker disappeared and has never shown himself again. The landlord and his wife have lived and prospered, becoming wealthy, and they're still living, if, of course, they haven't died.
