ABSTRACT
On the eve of the First World War Russia was still a relatively backward, agrarian country. This was despite considerable industrial growth over the previous thirty years, the level of output doubling during the 1890s. The Soviet Union became one of the world’s two ‘superpowers’ in terms of military capacity.
