ABSTRACT

The previous chapters looked at rates and explanations of suicide, suicide attempts and self-injury in prison, and in particular, amongst young prisoners. Most of the information on which such rates and explanations are based is derived from recordbased research. Official figures, prison department files and other sources of recorded information provide the source for most of our current understanding of the field. Only Johnson (1978), Johnson and Toch (1982) and Thornton (1990) talk to the inmates themselves, or use any other source of information besides records.
