ABSTRACT

Moore Smith questioned a number of assertions in Gosse’s Life and Letters of John Donne (‘Donniana’, Modern Language Review,8 (1913), 47-52).

[None of Moore Smith’s cavils affects the understanding of Donne’s poems but he does point out Donne’s several echoes of Shakespeare, correct some misreadings in Gosse’s text of Donne’s letters, and propose the likely date of the ‘Hymn to God my God, in my Sickness’.]
