ABSTRACT

Stephen Gwynn was an Irish biographer and literary historian who, after being a schoolmaster, became a journalist in London from 1896 to 1904, and then MP for Galway 1905-18. He referred to Donne in passing in his best-selling Masters of English Literature as a poet who had deservedly been forgotten (The Masters of English Literature, 1904, pp. 78, 127 and 400).
