ABSTRACT

A child dies; someone is convicted of her murder. In terms of guilt and violated rights the matter seems clear. The only disputed territory is whether the terrible event could have been prevented and, if so, by whom? If they did not, why not? The issues are stark and important, both of interest to the public and in the public interest. It is hardly surprising that trials for murder have always been a staple of the press. Fulfilling all their criteria of news worthiness, they are one of the few topics that receive extended in-depth coverage by the mass tabloids.
