Water, more than anything else, demonstrates the interdependence of the physical and human environments. No natural resource is more important than water, one writer calling it ‘The first commodity’ (Anon. 1992a). Because water is essential for all life and virtually every human activity, it is central to the study of the planet Earth as the habitat of all living things. It is central to geography.
