ABSTRACT

We have now looked at different aspects of loss and bereavement. In the preceding section we focused on research into bereavement and also experiences of bereavement which can bring us insights about human loss in general. Recognition of loss in our own lives (Exercise 8.3) and the feelings associated with these losses enables us to accept and listen to those who have recently suffered a loss. Therefore when using counselling skills as counsellors we can listen more effectively because we draw on our knowledge of ourselves and the naturalness of our own mourning process. We also have a confidence in the function ofgrieving and are not surprised that anyone loss is experienced as multiple losses or that it evokes feelings from previous losses. Rather like the anthropologists mentioned in chapter 6 our role is to observe, accept and value the experiences of others, trying to understand this experience at many levels yet without wishing to change it in any way.
