ABSTRACT

The significance of women’s collective action in its various manifestations can be examined within the context of three interrelated parameters. First, elements of female culture which define women’s space are essential in developing feminist consciousness that is an awareness and determination to eliminate gender-based discrimination and exploitation. Second, this consciousness is a necessary prerequisite for promoting feminist ideologies as well as for transforming society. Third, in multi-ethnic and class societies female models for societal change should have at their core the articulated aspirations and agendas of women from the economically and socially oppressed groups of society.
