Introduction

This book is concerned with the teaching of ‘languages other than French’ in British secondary schools. This term (often reduced by an infelicitous shorthand to LOTF) has usually been taken to cover German, Italian, Russian and Spanish, as the most commonly taught modern foreign languages after French, though it must now include other European languages, as well as the languages-normally called ‘community languages’ —of Britain’s ethnic minorities.
