ABSTRACT

French remains the first language in nearly all schools, taken by over 120, 000 pupils. Over the same period, German has expanded and is at present taken by 17,000 pupils, as compared with 11,000 10 years ago. The number of pupils taking Spanish has modestly increased from 1,500 to over 2,000. Russian and Italian are each taken by about 300 pupils, which amounts to a doubling of numbers taking Italian, and a considerable reduction in numbers taking Russian.1
