ABSTRACT
Throughout the century there have been consistent calls for the more widespread teaching of ‘languages other than French’. These have ranged from the impassioned pleas of individuals desperately concerned about the future for ‘their’ language, through the reasoned arguments of professional organisations, to official reports and statements of various kinds.
