ABSTRACT
Although Zakir Nagar may seem like only one mohalla in a city in India, the place and the people living there have a great deal to contribute to the way we understand the processes of identity construction and their complex relationships with history, politics, economics, social relations, and place in India and more generally. Also, while Zakir Nagar is not intended in any way to be representative of Muslim mohallas in India, listening to the voices of its residents holds up a mirror to wider processes of development and marginalisation that have been occurring in Delhi as a post-Partition city and in India over the past decades. I begin this concluding chapter by tracing my own narrative journey through the winding lanes of Zakir Nagar in each of the chapters presented and then proceed to highlight the study’s significance as a ‘feminist’ project along with its wider relevance as a challenge to current socio-political trends in India and beyond.
