ABSTRACT

The next two chapters seek to go beyond the critique of conventional development articulated earlier by explaining in some detail both a classic example of such development, the Narmada Valley Project (NVP), and the activities of many organisations round the world seeking to realise what has come to be called ‘Another Development’. The Narmada dams, and the struggle against them, provide probably the single clearest example of the main contesting views in the development debate today.
