ABSTRACT

All outdoor performers take some account of the location of their shows. However, some groups go much further and design the performance for a specific location. It might be that an already chosen theme needs an appropriate site; Lumiere & Son chose to do a show about the destruction of the rainforests and found an appropriate site in the grounds of London’s Kew Gardens. Or more usually, it might be that the physical aspects of the place propose the theme itself. They become the vital participants in the performance, just as much as the actors. The Dutch group Dogtroep were commissioned to do a performance beside a canal in Rotterdam. They devised all kinds of ways of using the water.
