ABSTRACT
This paper looks in brief at the size and structure of the museum system and comments on its economic and social significance. Available museums statistics are poor. Registration of museums will make it possible to establish for the first time accurate figures using consistent definitions on the number, scale and activities of museums (institutions and buildings). Meanwhile, it is necessary to work with estimates and approximations.
