ABSTRACT
Since preservation of the collection is a cornerstone of any museum’s mission, its collecting policy must take into account resources already available, as well as additional resources demanded by new acquisitions. These include space, environmental control and conservation expertise. Priority must go to creating a benign holding environment. However, fragile, damaged or unstable objects impose a particular burden and if conservation resources cannot be afforded then acquisition should be reconsidered.
