ABSTRACT

The formulation of a policy on volunteer involvement is essential for all museums where volunteers are present. Volunteers are a valuable part of a museum’s resources. Recognition of the validity of volunteer activity and all-volunteer museums as a major aspect of museum provision in the United Kingdom is given by the Museum Registration Scheme. No distinction is made between those museums partly, or wholly, managed by volunteers and those run by paid staff. Yet, the effective participation of volunteers can only be achieved if the specific issues relating to their management are addressed in any corporate plan.
