ABSTRACT

Reflections on a series of transformations in, on the one hand, the structure, organisation and experience of work and production and, on the other, art and culture, have been at the centre of debates which have developed around the respective ideas of postindustrial society and postmodern forms of life. Amongst other things what appears to be at issue in the various analyses is the possibility that the world of work has changed in significant ways, that the activities and practices, the skills and techniques, the associated structures and forms of organisation, and in turn the experience, meaning, and place of work in the lives of people, have all been radically transformed. Likewise it has been argued that in relation to art, communications, and culture no less significant transformations have occurred.
