ABSTRACT

In this book we have examined the ways in which soils are both influenced by, and themselves influence, the environment. During the course of this study a number of general points have emerged concerning soil-environmental interactions, and although many of these points have been summarised at the end of individual chapters, it is useful finally to draw together some of these aspects in order to provide an overview of our present state of understanding, and to consider the role of soils in the environment of the future.
