ABSTRACT
The concept of hierarchy is a central concept in many disciplines and in diverse discussions (levels of analysis in the philosophy of science; how to organize animal care in the drudgery of academic committeework). Not surprisingly, it means different things in different contexts. This chapter examines the salient aspects of the hierarchical concept as it pertains to the organization of action.
