ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the way in which the various services and agencies that are involved in the process of occupational placement for the school leaver operate. It reviews the Careers Service and agencies like the MSC, and also examines the provisions within the schools. The chapter presents an overview of Careers lessons, courses that focus on vocational preparation, such as Personal and Social Education programmes, and YTS-orientated schemes. It also investigates the type of advice and information received by students while they make crucial choices in their school career during their third, fifth and sixth years. One official information resource available to young black women in school was the Careers Education Programme. The function of the Careers Service is not only to provide the necessary information school leavers need for their decision-making process, but it is also involved in matching up pupils to compatible employers registered with them.
