ABSTRACT

SubsidizedUSfoodexportshaveunderminedpeasant agricultureandruralself-provisioning,integratingproductionconsumptionmorefirmlyintothecircuitsofagro-industrial accumulation.Theresulthasbeentointernationalizethe resourcebaseofagriculture,whichisreflectedintheincreasing asymmetrybetweenruralsupplystructuresanddomesticfood requirements.Asinthetransitiontointensiveaccumulation intheadvancedcountries,theincorporationofThirdWorld countriesintothepost-warinternationalfoodorderhas destroyedtraditionalwaysoflifebyextendingcommodityrelationstothefoodsupply.Friedmannarguespersuasivelythat thisorder'occupiedaspecificplaceinthedynamicsofglobal accumulation',representing'anintrinsicpartoftheproject ofcapitalistindustrialization'andcontributing'tothewidening anddeepeningofcapitalistrelationswithintheworld economy'(Friedmann1982:255-6).Thischapterexaminesthe internationalizationoftheUStechnology/policymodelafter theSecondWorldWar,andparticularlyitsconsequencesfor agrarianstructuresandfoodsupplyintheThirdWorld.
