ABSTRACT

Over a 4-week period, Mrs. R. noticed that Pat, her 12-year-old daughter, did not act and look the same. She drank a great deal, went to the bathroom frequently, and although she ate ferociously, she complained of being hungry. Her face looked drawn, and circles appeared under her eyes. She seemed listless, and her usually good spirits vanished. A visit to the family doctor resulted in an immediate admission to Children's Hospital where the diagnosis of insulin dependent diabetes was confirmed.
