ABSTRACT
Trade unions have always been problematic for the Conservative Party. For a political organisation committed to such principles and precepts as the market economy, individualism, the paramount importance of profit-making, maintaining the confidence of the City and the wider business community, ‘sound’ money, management’s right to manage, and capitalism generally, trade unions have constituted a major problem.
