ABSTRACT

Anticipation of a threatening event need not take place in a behavioral vacuum. Though the impending danger may very well monopolize one's attention, there are other behaviors that must go on. Life often presents situations that require instrumental coping with an impending threat, while at the same time there is a need to maintain some normal routine. Furthermore, the onset of the emergency itself may require the carrying out of certain actions not directly related to one's personal safety. From the stricly subjective point of view of the individual, we thus speak of actions and tasks that are not directly related to the threat signaled by the warning system.
