ABSTRACT

The first part of this essay is reprinted from my 1988 article, “Feminist theory, poststructuralism, and performance” (The Drama Review: A Journal of Performance Studies 32, 1:107-27). That argument was divided into four parts: it was my intention that it would grow in complexity and controversy as it went along. In fact, however, it is the first section-reprinted here-that has caused the most distress.
