ABSTRACT

The range of children in a school is decided by the LEA, which determines the age groups it caters for. The way children are organised within the school is the decision of the head and staff. Classes and groups can be formed on the basis of age, ability or stage of development or achievement in a particular activity. Children can also be grouped randomly or by friendship or family. Teachers can work solely within a particular class or they can take some subjects with another group or they can work with other teachers taking joint responsibility for a group of children.
