ABSTRACT

Catering for individuals within a class is never easy, but the National Curriculum has made it more than ever necessary to think in terms of individual progress, since the teacher is now required to assess the way each child develops in relation to the Attainment Targets. This is a matter of not only establishing the point a child has reached but of using this to plan his or her future progress. It is clearly not possible to make an individual plan in every case and managing a class depends upon being able to deal with the needs of most children, if not in a class group, then in a smaller group of children at around the same stage in their work. You can then use the knowledge gained from assessment to match individuals whose needs are different from those of the majority and to select individuals within the groups who need some particular help.
