ABSTRACT

The chapters in this book document the wide range of phenomena associated with spatial cognition. The majority of the issues addressed concern the representation and understanding of physical environments as a function of the nature of the space and the cognitive characteristics of the participants in the space. In many of the chapters there is a consideration of the influence of social interactions on these spatial cognitive processes. Certainly the theoretical positions of Bronfenbrenner (1979) on the ecological systems that influence development and of Siegel (1982) on the importance of social agenda for spatial understanding have led investigators in this direction of broader conceptualizations of spatial cognitive functioning.
