ABSTRACT
The welfare and civil rights of prisoners themselves have long been the concern of independent organizations such as NACRO (and SACRO and NIACRO), the Howard League for Penal Reform, and the Prison Reform Trust. But a voluntary sector interest in the associated needs of prisoners’ families, complementary to the limited help given by the probation service, social services departments and NACRO, is more recent (Wilson-Croome 1989).
