ABSTRACT

If the origin of a public office is worthy of praise, and if a good beginning can commend subsequent developments, then the Praetorian Prefecture can take pride in its distinguished founder, most sagacious among men and greatly esteemed by God. For when Pharaoh, the King of Egypt, was beset by unfathomable dreams concerning the danger of impending famines, and no human counsel could unravel their meaning, Joseph, a blessed man, was found, who could speak the truth about the future and help the threatened populace most farsightedly. This very man was the first to dedicate himself to the sacred responsibilities of the office [of Praetorian Prefect]. Inspiring awe, he mounted the carriage [of office] and was taken to such a height of glory that through wisdom he might bring to the people what the power of his master had not been able to provide.
