ABSTRACT
Having offered an overview of traditional religious life in Australia in the preceding chapter, it is now necessary to begin to consider the religious innovations that developed in response to invasion and to colonial life. If we are honest, we must admit that there are very few accounts of communities that were written before Western society had played havoc with ‘tradition’—although, until recently, most ethnographers downplayed, even ignored altogether, the colonial realities of their research environment.
